St. Michael’s House has requested this paper as a response to the growing numbers of children, particularly in the under 10 range using our current support services – respite, Link – and on the residential list.

This piece of research is an attempt to look at the following:-

• Why are the numbers of children using these support services increasing?
• What is causing families to need such services, what are the stress factors in families of children in the service?
• How are we helping families to prevent an accumulation of stress?
• What are the alternative ways that we could be responding to the needs of families which is in line with current best practice in relation to the provision of services to children?
